Sirrondach Ebony Tamarind (Tammy) - born 3/11/2000 - Pedigree >>
Welcome to the Sirrondach Dachshunds website. We hope you find something of interest here.
We are Sue and Doug Richardson and we live in a small town in Devon, England, together with fifteen miniature-longhaired dachshunds. We bought our first dachshund, a standard longhaired, in 1976, just as a pet and a companion for our cross-bred collie. We were tempted to enter one or two small local dog-shows with Tara, as she was called, just for a bit of fun, but having met her breeder at one of them it became obvious that she was not a very good Show Specimen, so we left the Showing to Shep, the collie, who did very well in Veteran classes.
When Shep died in 1985, poor old Tara missed her so much that she took to her bed and would only come out for food (eating was always her favourite occupation!). After a few weeks of pining it became clear that we had to do something to help her get over losing Shep, so we bought another dachshund, this time a Miniature on the grounds that it would eat less :-) We called this pretty silver-dapple "Mini", because she was, and for the first few weeks Tara made her life an absolute misery, apparently refusing to accept that anyone could possibly replace her beloved Shep. Mini of course just wanted to play, and she was very perseverent. Eventually she won Tara round and gave her a new lease of life for her remaining years. Tara died in 1992.
Having been bitten by the Showing Bug with Shep, we decided to give Mini a try and she entered her first K.C. Open Show in November 1985, in the Any Variety Hound Puppy class. She was awarded fourth place, and so the die was cast and our fates were sealed! Show followed upon Show and Mini received many place cards but rarely a "First". She was very full of herself and inclined to do what she wanted to do, which included barking like fury at anything on four legs - as you might imagine, this did not exactly endear her to other exhibitors nor to some of the judges! We were advised by a very experienced exhibitor to "let her have a litter, as it might calm her down somewhat ". So the second die was cast - Breeding !!
Mini had her litter, two dogs and a bitch, and did it make her behave more calmly? Of course it didn't!! (But you already knew that didn't you!) However, the bitch she had produced, Lissie, was a nice-looking black and tan, so when she had reached six months of age she went into the Show-ring as well as Mini, but with one difference - she behaved herself impeccably. It was Lissie that got us on to the Championship Show circuit really, as we had been too embarrassed to take Mini to these, and occasionally she was awarded a place. But her successes in the ring were short-lived because, surprise, surprise, she went over weight as a Junior. Still, we couldn't let a good bitch go to waste could we, so she was mated to a good silver-dapple dog and produced two well-behaved, small bitches for us to Show the following year.
And so it went on, one thing leading to another as no doubt they have for you, until we find ourselves here today living with fifteen adult dachshunds plus three puppies, and no money! But we have had some interesting times!!
